A New Idea On Work

Find A Career Where You Can Expand
All my life I’ve had the idea that if I was working at the perfect job I’d be happy all day long and just whistle a happy tune. Recently a new idea has been presented to me. What if you did a job because it helped you expand in some way? Rather than looking for the easiest job or the job that’s the most fun, what if you were doing something that would expand your knowledge, your creativity, your skills, your intelligence?
Most of my life I’ve been trying to find an extremely simple job More >
Slow Moving
Nov 4th
When preparing to open a new business, time can just slip through your fingers.
I just looked at my past blog entries and noted that it was way back at the end of July that I said I was going to try and get myself more organized. Here it’s November and I’m not any further along that I was then.
Well, that’s not 100% true. I’ve been taking all the free small business classes at the local community college, which have helped me see what I need to do, and I’m finally ready to start looking into three possibilities.

Putting The Cart Before The Horse
Jul 26th
I’ve been trying to work on preparing to open a new business lately. I was contemplating how things are going and I have to admit, terrible. I don’t seem to be taking my own advice. I keep getting drawn this direction and that. Someone says, “do this,” someone else, “do that.” I keep finding that I’m not doing what I know is the best track.
You may find yourself in those shoes, too, especially if there is little or no flow of income at the moment, and you’re responsible to bring some in. You want so badly for the business to More >
Dad’s House
Jun 21st
Thanks to Wm Rowe
When my dad died late last year, he left his giant countryhouse to me. I thought it was going to be a wonderful vacation property, but there are a lot of expenses associated with owning a home that I hadn’t realized. Up until then, I had just been a renter, so I didn’t know anything about homeowners insurance, fire insurance, or how much it costs to make home repairs. I learned really quickly though, as you have to do, and I found a few ways to save some bucks. I researched a better electricity rate for the More >
Getting Organized
Jun 10th
For a number of years I had a task management program that worked like a charm and kept me on track. However, at one point they did a complete revamp on the program and wanted me to buy it all over again. At that point I didn’t feel like I needed to cough up that much money, so let it drop.
However, now with running one business, starting to prepare to start a non-profit, taking care of the house, yard, errands, etc. I realize I need some help. I started looking for a task management program that could do what I More >
Creating A Mentoring Group
Jun 7th
Doing things alone isn’t a lot of fun. It can be lonely. You can get discouraged. You can even make mistakes that aren’t necessary. Creating or joining a group of people that are interested in the same thing you are can really help.
You can base it on different aspects of what you are doing. You can create a group of people opening new businesses, or focused on a particular business. You can create or join a group focusing on marketing, legal issues, financing, grant writing, etc.
The most important thing is to form a group that is in synch. You may More >
How To Rise Above The Crowd
May 26th
In this day and age, a new business has to really stand out in order to stay afloat. When opening we’re often more interested in the sales numbers than the customers. This is one of the biggest errors a new business owner can make.
There’s customer service and then there is real customer service. Recently the local grocery store started calling loudly “Welcome to (store name)” as you walked through the door. I was so shocked that I actually jumped. In their attempt to seem like they care about you, they had chosen to be loud and insincere.
