May 4th
Putting an ad in the paper is the best way to get thousands of unqualified applications. There are better ways now.
When You Only Need Temporary HelpYou’ve got a project that needs to be completed, but you don’t want to hire someone full-time. Not only that you don’t want to just hire someone online, out of the blue, as you’ve had some bad experiences with not getting what you paid for and no real recourse.
Sideskills may just be the answer for you. It is an online project based hiring system where you can post job vacancy and receive a pre-screened list of More >
Even Good People Do Dumb Things

A good lawyer will convince the gavel to fall in your favor.
A Small Mistake, Turns BigSimply celebrating a little too much, and getting caught behind the wheel, can completely change your life or the life of one of your employees. It could means months of court appearances, loss of money, productivity, and even some time in jail, depending on the severity of the charge. Sometimes we think that the charge is something simple, and we’ll get out of it easily. However, unless you’re a lawyer you might want to think twice about trying to defend yourself.

When Advice Is Useless
Apr 3rd
I’ve been working with my class for about a month now. Everyone loves it. They think the information is great and the way it’s presented helpful. The one thing that everyone is having at least some problem with is implementing it.
Today I spent some time surfing the net looking for ways to make lifestyle changes permanent. I didn’t find anything I didn’t already know, but what I know isn’t enough for the students I have.
For instance, almost every single site I looked at said. Make out a doable schedule. Well how the heck do you do that? If you’re More >
Bankruptcy Misconceptions
Jan 19th
Do you feel the hammer hanging over the head of your business' financial security?
There are so many misconceptions about bankruptcy that I thought it might be helpful to highlight a few. There were massive changes to the bankruptcy law back in 2005. Some people even came out of it believing that if you hadn’t filed by 2005 you never could! That’s how mixed up everything got.
I’m just going to highlight a few of the more common misperception here.
First, your house, car, and boat are not exempt from paying off the loan if they are listed in your bankruptcy filing. You’ll More >
Strategic Plan In One Line
Jan 9th
Play your "chips" right and you could have a winning business.
In preparing to start new businesses, it’s not a bad idea to talk to friends, relatives, and acquaintances about their experiences. Find out what worked well for them and what didn’t, so you don’t have to make the same mistake over again.
Recently my husband and I were talking to a friend that has had a business for over 20 years. We asked him about what software he uses, etc., but the best bit of information he gave us was the one line strategic plan idea.

Some Decisions Finally Made
Dec 16th
We're trying out Task Coach for organizing all our to-dos.
For the past two to three weeks my husband and I have been looking at programs to manage our budding businesses. We had some pretty strict requirements and it took a long time to find one that came close to meeting our needs.
The first thing we looked for was a task management program. We were very intrigued by Toodledo, but a little leery of having all our information on the cloud. We live out in the country and every once in awhile we’ll have an outage in our Internet carrier from More >
Let’s Start At The Very Beginning
Dec 5th
A very good place to start. When we read we begin with A, B, C. When we sing we begin with do, re, mi, the song goes. After doing considerable soul searching I realized I’m putting the cart before the horse. I want to open a business, but I really don’t know how to run one.
I realized that I spent most of my adult life working for someone. They told me what and when to do everything. My day was all laid out for me. There were no decisions or distractions. I couldn’t watch TV, do the laundry, work in More >
The Clock Is Ticking
Nov 28th
It would be great to have a crystal ball to tell me what profession to pursue.
Boy, I only have a few more days until I’m supposed to be ready to start on the business plan for my new business and I still haven’t decided what path to take. I did, however, discover a very interesting and instructive web page that gives statistics on the average income for various occupations.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics has a wealth of information about various occupations, and although my exact “job description” isn’t found in one area I’m interested in, I was able to look at More >
Maybe I Should Have Opened A Store
Nov 22nd
I’m in charge of the bookstore for a small non-profit I volunteer for. When I got my first pricing gun, just before a big event, I was like a kid in a candy store. I spent hours in a hot, muggy storage unit, pricing all the items for the event and didn’t even notice it.
Maybe I should have opened a retail store. I worked retail during the summer’s when I was in college and really enjoyed it. I just never considered the possibility of actually owning my own store.
Eco-friendly wood shelves would be perfect for my store!
However, maybe you have, More >
SWOT Before You Commit
Nov 20th
You’ve already done your business plan. It looks like a go. Before you commit to opening, think SWOT.
Your business has been open for some time. You’re looking at ways to help it grow. You’ve got a number of ideas on the board and are trying to decide which one is the most viable, think SWOT.
SWOT has become a buzzword in business these days. It takes the usual business plan or brainstorming meeting and gives it a different focus. SWOT stand for Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats.
Looking at threats can help you plan a proactive strategy.
